TeamViewer and Splashtop both cover remote access and support, but the right comparison is not simply “premium versus budget.” Buyers need to compare licensing units, administration, deployment model, and performance on their own endpoints. This article uses current public product information and dated vendor disclosures rather than private customer anecdotes.

Treat pricing rows as dated — both vendors reprice often.

Pricing: compare the complete workload

Splashtop’s official pricing page, checked July 8, 2026, publishes entry prices for Remote Access Solo, Pro, and Performance, while Enterprise and On-Prem require sales engagement. TeamViewer publishes regional pricing and packages features and capacity by edition on its pricing overview. A visible starting price does not establish the total cost for an IT team.

Build the comparison from your real workload:

  • licensed users or technicians;
  • unattended endpoints and attended-support requirements;
  • simultaneous remote sessions;
  • SSO, audit, access-control, integration, and recording requirements;
  • add-ons, regional taxes, contract length, and renewal terms.

Request dated written quotes using the same workload. Historical prices or another customer’s contract are not reliable budgeting inputs.

Deployment: SaaS and On-Prem are separate products

Splashtop’s mainstream Remote Access and Remote Support subscriptions are vendor-operated services. Splashtop also sells a separately licensed On-Prem product. Its official product page describes a self-hosted deployment using a Splashtop On-Prem Gateway in the customer’s DMZ or behind its firewall.

That distinction matters. Buying a standard Splashtop subscription does not mean deploying On-Prem, and evaluating Splashtop On-Prem is not the same as trialing a standard SaaS plan. The On-Prem path adds customer-side infrastructure, network design, TLS, upgrades, backup, monitoring, and capacity planning. Splashtop’s system requirements document a dedicated Gateway and server sizing requirements.

TeamViewer’s standard comparison path is its managed service. Buyers with a hard requirement for customer-operated brokering infrastructure should compare Splashtop On-Prem with other self-hosted products rather than treating the SaaS editions as equivalent deployments.

Performance: test the workflow, not the headline

Splashtop Performance advertises 4:4:4 color, high-fidelity audio, USB passthrough, and capability up to 240 FPS. Those features can matter for media, CAD, and other visually sensitive work. TeamViewer emphasizes broad endpoint support, managed administration, and service-desk workflows.

Neither positioning statement predicts performance in your environment. Pilot both products with the same:

  • office, home, mobile, and high-latency network paths;
  • Windows, macOS, Linux, and mobile combinations you support;
  • attended and unattended sessions;
  • multi-monitor, audio, file-transfer, printing, and privilege-elevation tasks;
  • expected number of simultaneous technician sessions.

Record connection time, interaction latency, image quality, failure rate, and technician effort. A short controlled test is more useful than an isolated online complaint or vendor benchmark.

Security: both are more serious than “cheap vs expensive” suggests

Security claims need dates and boundaries. Splashtop’s September 18, 2025 announcement reports ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification, while its current security page lists SOC 2, TLS 1.2, and 256-bit AES session protection. Certification is a point-in-time attestation rather than a guarantee of ongoing security, so treat every such claim as dated and verify it against each vendor’s current disclosures.

TeamViewer’s current Trust Center lists SOC 2/SOC 3 and ISO/IEC 27001, and its technical security overview documents current architecture and encryption. These are vendor statements — verify against current disclosures.

Where each product fits

TeamViewer may fit organizations that want a managed service with structured policy controls, reporting, mass deployment, and enterprise integrations. Confirm which edition supplies each required control rather than assuming the full feature set exists in every plan.

Splashtop SaaS may fit teams that prioritize straightforward deployment, published entry pricing, and its performance-oriented feature set. Splashtop Enterprise and On-Prem address different requirements and should be quoted separately.

The decision changes when infrastructure control, source visibility, or a different licensing model becomes a requirement. That is where a self-hosted alternative belongs in the evaluation.

Splashtop advertises specific color, audio, and frame-rate figures; RustDesk publishes no competing headline numbers, and once a direct connection is established sessions flow peer-to-peer between endpoints rather than through a vendor relay. As with the Splashtop and TeamViewer figures above, the only number that decides anything is the one you measure on your own endpoints and networks.

Open source, for the MSP workflow. RustDesk’s core client and free server are AGPL-licensed, so teams can inspect the code and evaluate basic self-hosting before buying Server Pro; TeamViewer and Splashtop are proprietary. A fully self-hosted, open-source alternative belongs on that same evaluation sheet, judged on control, workload, and total cost rather than on the monthly SaaS sticker.
